Easy Breezy Brioche 2-Color Cowl in the Round – a super relaxed introduction to brioche knitting in the round! – Session 1
Instructor: Winn Archambeau-Muñoz
Thursday, July 29th; 11:30am – 2:30pm
So many patterns call for the Brioche stitch and some instructions make it seem overly complicated. After teaching brioche many times, I wanted to create an extremely easy project that would ensure a successful start to knitting brioche and offer a lovely cushy cowl as a final product.
We will learn to do the brioche knit and the brioche purl stitches as well as the basic techniques on a practice piece (started prior to class) using about 50 yards each of 2 quite different smooth worsted weight yarns (can be from your stash). Next, we will translate these skills to a cowl using the yarn of your choice Yardage amounts and pattern will be given for the final cowls based on the chosen yarn.
Level: Must be able to knit and purl and be familiar with knitting in the round.
Materials: 50 yards each of 2 strongly contrasting colors of smooth worsted weight yarn and appropriate needles for the practice section. For the actual cowl you may choose any weight yarn and the appropriate size needles. You will need approximately 150 yards of each color for the actual cowl. Be sure to choose contrasting colors.
Tools: US 7 16 in circular needle for practice, 24 in circular needle for the actual cowl in the size appropriate to the yarn, a tapestry needle, a crochet hook, a pair of needles several sizes smaller than the for the yarn (US size 3 or 4), dental floss, stitch markers – locking stitch markers and the slip on kind, and regular knitting supplies.
Homework: With a US 7 or US 8 16 in circular needle cast on 61 stitches with your main color worsted weight scrap yarn. Join in the round carefully by slipping the last st over the first stt (60 sts). Purl 1 round, Knit 1 round. Repeat these 2 rounds 2 more times. (3 ridges of garter stitch). Leave the sts on the needle ready to begin the set-up round in class. Be sure and have 2 very contrasting colors.
